Sherlock: The Empty Hearse Review

** Spoiler Alert

If you have not read my post regarding the questions that they have to answer in this new season (well, it was always their choice but still) then you might start it from there. You can read it here.

Most of the questions were answered except perhaps the most important one. And I did make a mistake in assuming that Holmes would try to pull off the whole thing on his own.

Now coming to this episode; The first thing I liked about the it was that they seem to have re-worked and re-shot a lot of scenes based on the fan theories floating around the internet. So when I first saw the whole bungee thing and the mask and the hypnotist along with some serious 21st century attitude to spice it all up; I did roll my eyes and had a smile about it.

Then they got another thing right. This particular Watson's reaction to Holmes' return was much more violent, as they claimed, than that in the book.It was understandable because Conan Doyle's Watson was in some ways different from this one. Perhaps more mature. Different people react differently to the same situation. On the whole they did not disappoint me completely in the process of explaining the fall. But then I did have my questions on Moriarty's intelligence levels as portrayed by them.

Once the tone was set and we were into the new season is when they made the classic mistake. The last episode from the last season and the magnitude of the hype that followed have certainly distracted the creators from focusing on the current story at hand. The current plot was terribly weak. A terrorist attack on any city is never a poorly planned one for a starter. And what was worse? It was completely "Un-Holmes" like. I mean any fellow with a hat on could have been in that position and any fellow who had about 10 seconds to live would have done the same thing. You don't need a genius for that.

Now if you have read "The Empty House" (LOL I know you wouldn't be reading this otherwise), then you would know how wonderfully thrilling the return of Holmes was. It was not the case here. That took away a lot of points from the episode. All is not over yet. They still have a chance to redeem themselves in the next episode but we'll have to wait and see because "The sign of Three" does not involve a super villain as far as I know.

And speaking of the new villain, I hope it is the honorable Col. Sebastian Moran himself and NOT a Moriarty re-born. If it is indeed Moriarty then it would be an overkill (for me at least).
